Default Apparently Ennui is more common than we knew

"Family dinners are more often than not an ordeal of nervous indigestion, preceded by hidden resentment and ennui and accompanied by psychosomatic jitters."

Default Tired of indigestion, resentment, and psychsomatic jitters? Try ennui instead.

Thanks for that bit of paradoxy, darkyr. I wonder if this quote had to do with memories of childhood meals with her live-in grandmother who, reportedly, was a joyless believer in overcooked, bland food. Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher (1909-92) was a prolific writer of books about food that were laced with hefty splashes of travel and memoir. She wrote that, when grandma was away at religious conventions, the family would "... indulge in a voluptuous riot of things... [including} skewered kidneys with a daring dash of sherry on them." Perhaps they were thinking of grandma whilst skewering those kidneys.

Default Beware the treacherous, comma.

"We are more often treacherous, through weakness than through calculation. "
Francois de la Rochefoucauld

Calculate your efforts and never show your weakness!

This guy I don't like, nor do I like his friends.

kimmie on 2012-11-26 01:29:46
This statement is confusing because the comma is misused.

wvwoman on 2013-08-09 15:38:32
yeah, we could lose the comma.

montyb on 2014-04-02 10:30:06
Rotten, treacherous comma.

"The best time for planning a book is while you're doing the dishes." Agatha Christie

LiveLoveLaugh on 2011-09-17 19:26:43
That's why I have never planned a book.

montyb on 2012-05-06 13:46:12
Oh, the books I could have planned.

Lurker on 2012-07-14 00:00:22
That's a lot of dishes.

iltquilt on 2012-09-27 03:12:10
Well, perhaps she meant that the best time for planning (anything -- insert something here) is when one is doing dishes. Example: The best time for planning (one's next quilt) is while you're doing the dishes.

abra on 2012-10-04 19:24:15
Hard to imagine Agatha Christie doing the dishes.

montyb on 2013-09-27 15:11:47
She probably had to do them so often she wanted to kill someone. Those plans became her novels.

dovid1946, I thought he (Dr. Sun More) might have been a Korean practictioner of the time.

On the other hand, if you consulted with Dr. Sun Myung Moon, you could have ended up in a cult.

Default I loved daryr's response

"A hard fall means a high bounce... if you're made of the right material. "

I bounce quite well... of course being shaped like a ball is a tremendous help.

darkyr on 2016-06-13 09:04:38
Followed by another fall, another bounce, until finally you roll along the floor and wind up in the corner covered in cat hair.

Default Andy;s blog

"If it came true, it wasn't much of a dream."
Mignon McLaughlin

Andy451 on 2015-11-01 02:20:16
This works for man's attempt to end unemployment, poverty, prejudice, and rigid forms of the class system in most societies. Man has truly failed to bring about heaven on earth I suppose. But it's short sighted and unimaginative, and probably un-American when considering the large strides we've made in bringing about affordable healthcare, green planet initiatives that reduce our carbon foot print, and racial equality and harmony between Black and white Americans. Martin Luther King would disagree with her, and so would I. Another problem with the quote, is that it regards any dream that we have accomplished as small potatoes and unimportant by definition. I think Walt Disney would be pretty happy about how things turned out for the Disney corpora- tion. Faulkner had to be pretty happy about writing As I Lay Dying, The Sound and the Fury, the Snopes trilogy for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. Darwin, Freud, and Einstein had to have moments where they appreciated the profound gifts their research offered humanity. Watson and Cricks proving the existence of DNA had to be a dream come true for them. Getting in to the college of your choice, and coming out a few years later with a BA, MA, PHD or law or medical degreee has to be a dream come true for most of the people who have done that. With this quote, Filet Mignon makes a mis-steak of epic proportions, by throwing the baby out with the bath water! And Filet, we kicked the British out of the United States during the revolutionary war, we ended slavery in this country, we gave women the right to vote, and we ended child labor as well. We used the Marshall plan of Eminem to keep Europe from becoming communist after the end of WWII, and we put a man on the moon in 1972 which you've seem to have forgotten. Soon we will put men and women on Mars. These are dreams that came true, or soon will come true, and it is not wrong to make much of them, despite your contemptuous dismissal.

Do you like to rant much, Andy?

marnita on 2016-07-10 03:51:16
I very seldom have a dream that I would want to come true.

Mobo on 2016-08-07 04:46:53
Not to be pedantic but we put a man on the moon in 1969. Also, I think our friend Mignon was probably talking about the dreams we have when we're asleep. Per the other kind of dream, I agree with you, Andy.

abra on 2017-01-01 13:10:08
I don't think she was talking about dreams we have in sleep. I'll never know if I agree with Andy or not.
