"The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office." -- Robert Frost So THIS must be the office he was talking about.

universalmom on 2016-07-08 15:20:48
Is that anywhere near the Ministry of Silly Walks?

kb83 on 2017-02-13 08:44:34
Thanks, LLapp. The poet is "in."

That guy must have been the life of the party.

montyb on 2014-03-13 15:07:50
I hear that after a couple drinks he goes around wearing a lamp shade on his lamp.

How cruel to bombard cryptogram solvers with all these wise anti-idleness sayings.

"Idleness, like kisses, to be sweet must be stolen." Jerome K. Jerome

iltquilt on 2012-07-05 20:44:04
The only acceptable form of thievery: stolen kisses and stolen glances.

"Each man has his appointed day: short and irreparable in the brief life of all, but to extend our fame by our deeds, this is the work of mankind. "
Virgil

LLapp on 2014-10-04 17:24:03
Can anybody tell me what this quote means?

dovid1946 on 2015-02-05 12:05:29
even though life is short, every person has the opportunity to do good deeds and make a name for himself.

tgreen517 on 2015-03-21 14:11:27
Well it just says "deeds" . The "good" part is implied i guess.

dovid1946 on 2015-05-06 07:11:42
I have absolutely no recollection of having written the above comment 3 months ago. Any day now, I am going to leave the keys in the fridge.

LLapp on 2015-07-20 19:38:34
Oh that's where the keys are!! Thanks David!

darkyr on 2016-07-21 08:38:04
Now where did I leave that fridge?

"I don't have a problem with caffeine. I have a problem without caffeine!"
Unattributed

universalmom on 2012-06-21 20:19:25
OH yeah...

wvwoman on 2013-08-07 02:31:26
good one!

mins on 2015-01-19 13:53:34
That's exactly what someone with a caffeine problem would say.

Spenser on 2015-01-31 07:33:32
That's assuming, of course, that it's a 'problem."

tjsrc on 2015-04-20 10:34:08
It's not a problem, I can quit any time I want.

montyb on 2015-05-07 08:44:36

msswitch on 2015-06-23 08:45:02
most common addiction

marnita on 2015-07-13 16:55:44
If I have to be addicted to something, better caffeine than alcohol.

LLapp on 2016-03-02 11:28:32
The Renaissance was the direct result of coffee houses taking the place of taverns as gathering places.

SwampySox on 2016-07-24 08:17:52
Got sicker than a dog after quitting caffeine for 3 days. Caffeine cured me. Became an alcoholic, but another drink won't fix that.

sznndenise on 2016-10-04 02:08:14
I used caffeine as my calmative in a stressful job, I can no longer drink it without getting sick

universalmom on 2017-03-03 08:15:57
LLapp, have you ever read The Coffee Trader?

badbob on 2017-06-26 09:31:43

"Occasionally, I have to think like myself to remember where I put something."
Sue S. Taylor

gryhnd51 on 2012-03-24 00:35:17
And on occassion that is a difficult thing to do.

montyb on 2013-09-17 08:53:12
Especially when you must..... What was I saying?

oddcouple on 2013-10-15 01:03:06
Been there, done that.

cherylab1963 on 2014-10-12 22:58:16
I have to go back to the living room to remember why I went into kitchen. What did I come in here for?

dovid1946 on 2015-03-26 09:52:26
did I put my keys in the refrigerator again?

oddcouple on 2015-11-16 14:52:26
I believe in the hereafter. I go into the bedroom for something and then have to ask myself 'What am I here after?"

LLapp on 2016-07-11 16:50:17
Time to drop everything and take this quiz. http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/20...stupid-and-old

susanith on 2016-10-23 17:19:13
You are all so funny -- and right on.

momof7 on 2017-07-11 17:05:38
When putting something away, don't think: Where is a good place for this? Think: Where would I look for this? It's often not the same place.

Default Wise Sayings

"A single man has not nearly the value he would have in a state of union. He is an incomplete animal. He resembles the odd half of a pair of scissors." Benjamin Franklin

nelnose on 2011-01-25 23:41:31
Bad Ben; bad bad Ben!! One of the few unwise statements from him.

matarisa on 2011-05-09 21:03:41
It was certainly true in the eighteenth century.

dovid1946 on 2015-02-04 14:13:59
he also said that early to bed is a penny earned

tjsrc on 2015-03-07 14:41:29
My large collection of scissors and lack of marital life say different, Ben.

cryptospiridiagram on 2016-03-01 11:12:56
He's a fool. He said a penny saved is early to rise, so I saved one and watched it. Hours later, still no risen penny, and I felt no wiser.

killdozer on 2016-08-12 12:30:07
My favorite one is "A fool and his money will soon party."

"You can't be suspicious of a tree, or accuse a bird or a squirrel of subversion or challenge the ideology of a violet."
Hal Borland

puffybob on 2011-10-24 12:37:14
You can't be suspicious of a tree? The man's obviously unfamiliar with Charlie Brown.

montyb on 2012-06-05 19:35:04
He is also unfamiliar with Agent 13 of C.O.N.T.R.O.L.

bansaisequoia on 2012-08-24 18:19:05
No, but I hear a bunny rabbit was once excommunicated and Joe McCarthy blacklisted a scarlet tanager and a ruby-throated grackle.

Allen on 2013-02-26 14:15:50
Bunnies and tanagers and grackles, Oh My!

Barnabas on 2013-06-06 21:17:32
I don't know... that Big Bird can be one suspicious character.

Lurker on 2014-01-27 12:41:32
Rocky the Squirrel isn't off the hook, either.

universalmom on 2014-02-13 04:58:30
Are you kidding me?? Those dang squirrels are up to something!

kb83 on 2014-07-16 10:06:22
And I hope you didn't stop to smell the roses?

LLapp on 2014-11-07 10:57:21
Not accuse a squirrel of subversion? He hasn't watched the shenanigans in my backyard. They are ruthless, cunning, too fat already, and up to no good.

haverwench on 2015-04-04 09:25:32
Subversive Squirrel would be a great cartoon character.

dovid1946 on 2015-05-23 07:10:05
I used to be a big fan of Rocky and Bullwinkle. It wasn't until many years later that I discovered the pun in the name of the Russian agent, Boris Badanov ( Gudonov). That made me an even bigger fan.

LLapp on 2015-07-05 13:47:34

nelnose on 2016-03-18 14:19:23
Be suspicious of that violet that answers your challenge.

marnita on 2016-07-20 06:42:17
If you've ever seen a squirrel anywhere need a bird feeder, you know just how subversive they can be. But I do love them.

spacecoyote1966 on 2016-08-04 07:12:44
I guess he's never seen HR PuffnStuff.

MamaB on 2017-04-12 04:46:50
I immediately thought of squirrels in my birdfeeder!

"An honest man is the best thing on the sod; but a mother and her babe is the noblest work of God." Unattributed

rooby2s on 2015-12-11 14:45:38
True, but, once in a while, it would be nice to have a quote with which today's working class person could identify. Not so stilted.

kb83 on 2017-08-07 09:08:06
An honest sod is the best thing in creation. But a bloke and his babe make the next generation.
